3. Concrete Washout Bays & Hazardous Chemical Hydrocarbon Containment
Washing concrete ready-mix truck chutes or wheelbarrows directly onto bare earth is one of the most common and severe environmental violations discovered by ECOs. Concrete wash water contains caustic lime with a pH exceeding 12.0, equivalent to household bleach, which instantly kills soil microorganisms and poisons aquatic life.
Contractors must construct dedicated Concrete Washout Bays lined with durable 250-micron UV-stabilized plastic sheeting and sandbag berms. Wash water evaporates, and the hardened dried concrete is broken up and recycled as road sub-base.
Furthermore, all diesel fuel bowsers, chemical containers, and stationary generators must sit on impervious drip trays or inside 110% capacity sealed bunds equipped with hydrocarbon absorbent pads.
