Course Overview:

 

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to be an effective Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) representative in the workplace. The course is specifically tailored for the South African audience and complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) regulations.

Course Objectives:

 

  • Describing the framework of workplace health and safety legislation pertaining to health and safety representatives

  • Explaining the specified requirements to conduct safety, health and environmental representation activities at a working place

  • Addressing safety, health and environment related issues within their scope of authority

  • Complying with the activities within safety, health and environmental structures

  • Explaining both employer and employee duties with regard to occupational safety and health in the workplace

  • Explaining the general safety rules in a workplace

  • Explaining the use and application of Personal Protective Equipment in a workplace

  • Explaining the need for good housekeeping in the workplace

  • Explaining and applying emergency procedures in the workplace

Course Duration: 2 days

​

The course will be delivered over 2 days, with a total of 16 hours of training

​

Course Content:

 

  • Introduction to Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) legislation and regulations

  • Roles and responsibilities of the SHE representative

  • Hazard identification and risk assessment

  • Incident investigation and reporting

  • Developing and implementing safety, health and environment policies and procedures

  • Monitoring and reporting on safety, health and environment performance

  • Emergency preparedness and response

  • Safety, health and environment management systems

  • Communication and consultation

Assessment:

​

  • A written test to assess learners' knowledge of SHE legislation, policies and procedures

  • A practical assessment to evaluate learners' ability to identify and evaluate workplace hazards and implement appropriate control measures

  • A workplace assessment to evaluate learners' ability to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world workplace scenario

Certification:

​

Learners who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of competency in Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Representative Training, which is valid for three years.

​

Prerequisites:

​

  • Learners must be at least 18 years of age

  • Learners should have a basic understanding of workplace health and safety

​
